I still find Wishlist Member the best membership plugin and they keep making it better. No, it is not free. Howver, when I first used free tools I quickly found they were difficult to manage and customize to my needs – plus no support. Seriously try wishlist member.

WordPress united lets you have members where they can make their own blogs, with limited profiles.
Your best bet is to go for buddypress, which is more like facebook
then go here & get a decent theme for it
